Dr. Haezreena Begum Abdul Hamid

She is a Criminologist and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya, with extensive experience in civil and criminal litigation since being called to the Malaysian Bar in 1997. Her research focuses on human trafficking, incarceration, gender and women’s rights, terrorism, and serious crimes.

In 2022, she was awarded a grant by the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to conduct capacity-building training for law enforcement officials and Protection Officers on human trafficking. Her contributions were instrumental in Malaysia’s Tier 2 upgrade in the U.S. Trafficking in Persons Report, earning recognition from the Minister of Home Affairs in 2024.

She also received a grant from ESIWA/EU to interview returnees and ex-detainees from Syria and Afghanistan. Additionally, she was appointed by the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) to evaluate two former Guantanamo Bay detainees linked to the Bali and Jakarta bombings (2002/2003), producing an assessment report for the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA).

With thousands of hours of fieldwork, she has conducted in-depth interviews with 70 female prisoners, 40 trafficking victims, and returnees from conflict zones. She currently serves as an expert witness in terrorism-related cases, including the GISBH case.
