Progres25 Kongres

Melaka, 3-5 October 2025 – Progres25 gathered individuals from different backgrounds ranging from civil society activists to student movement activists to reflect on the meaning of progress and to renew a sense of shared purpose. Eow Shiang Yen, INITIATE.MY’s Partnership and Communications Officer participated in this conference. Discussions about civil society and public engagement drew attention to areas that could be improved, including coordination between networks, communication of shared values, and support for sustainability. There was a common understanding that the strength of a movement depends on how well it listens to the public and how clearly it connects ideals to lived experiences. Participants recognised that meaningful change grows from small acts of cooperation that eventually shape collective direction.

The sessions consisted of thematic discussions that encouraged reflection on political narratives, regional engagement, and intergenerational collaboration.

Participants explored how the notion of being progressive could adapt to Malaysia’s unique social and cultural realities, where global labels often do not align with local contexts. Conversations highlighted the need for inclusive narratives on religion and governance that can bridge divides, as well as for a stronger focus on local engagement in regions where civic space remains limited. The atmosphere encouraged open exchange of perspectives, blending structured dialogue with moments of informal connection and shared learning.

Besides that, interactive components such as excursions and group dinner across Melaka provided participants with opportunities to observe how progressive ideas intersect with community realities. Visits to local service centres and grassroots organisations allowed for dialogue with stakeholders managing everyday social issues, reinforcing the relevance of grounded approaches in movement-building.

The closing conversation reflected on how progress requires both continuity and renewal, calling for ongoing collaboration among different generations, sectors, and regions. The event concluded with a shared understanding that sustaining a progressive movement depends on unity, empathy, and the commitment to learn and act collectively.

Like-minded participants gathered at Progres25 to reflect on strategies to strengthen unity, cohesion, and shared purpose within Malaysia’s progressive landscape.
