INITIATE.MY’s publications have gained traction among key policy stakeholders—including embassies, international organisations, human rights commissions, academic institutions, and tech companies—through citations, invitations to policy briefings, and participation in high-level conferences aimed at policy development and improvement

Databases

The organisation has developed niche databases that systematically collect and quantify incidents of conflict and societal tension driven by racism and religious hatred, as well as laws affecting religious freedom and online extremism.

Policy Briefs

By the end of 2025, INITIATE.MY have published six policy briefs covering critical topics such as:

The role of civil society in shaping Malaysia’s National Action Plan on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (NAPPCVE),

The importance of reintegration programmes for former security detainees,

On-campus radicalisation,

Mediation as a tool for peaceful conflict resolution,

The escalation of hate speech into societal intolerance, and Technology-facilitated harm and digital platform accountability.

Special Reports

Additionally, three special reports have been published, focusing on:

  • Civil society’s recommendations for Malaysia’s National Action Plan on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (NAPPCVE),
  • Online far-right extremism trends and dynamics, and
  • Far-right extremism and tech accountability

Two-Way Engagements

Capacity Building for Law Enforcement

(2023–2024)

In collaboration with UNODC ROSEAP, INITIATE.MY conducted four training series for 90 officers from the E8 Special Branch (Counterterrorism) and Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK). The training aimed to strengthen law enforcement capacity in understanding violent extremism, conducting investigations, gathering evidence, developing prosecutable cases, and handling violent extremism suspects and offenders. All sessions were held in Kuala Lumpur

Strategic Communications on Countering Violent Extremism

(2023–2024)

Also in partnership with UNODC ROSEAP, INITIATE.MY delivered four training sessions on Strategic Communications for CVE, engaging 90 participants from diverse backgrounds—government agencies, law enforcement, youth, and civil society organisations. The programme focused on developing skills to craft counter-narratives against hate speech and extremist ideologies. Sessions were held in Kuala Lumpur and Bali.

Roundtable Discussion on Online Far-right Extremism

INITIATE.MY convened a roundtable discussion on online far-right extremism trends and recommendations to address it with the Minister of Communications, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Fahmi Fadzil; British High Commissioner, Her Excellency Ailsa Terry CMG; and over 30 participants from government and civil society sectors.

Fostering Social Resilience

Peace Lab

(2017, 2024, 2025)

The Peace Lab programme has trained over 90 youth leaders from diverse Malaysian backgrounds to become active advocates of peacebuilding, religious freedom, and tolerance. The initiative has collaborated with more than 30 organisations, including SEARCCT, PDRM, JPNIN, the Content Forum, TikTok, and numerous civil society groups

Salam Stage

(2025)

Salam Stage, a live storytelling event held in Kuala Lumpur
in partnership with Freedom Film Network (FFN), featured five prominent public
intellectuals, artists, and activists sharing their experiences in peacebuilding.
The event engaged over 100 attendees, particularly Millennials and Gen Z
audiences.

DRAPAC

(2025)

Digital Rights in the Asia-Pacific Assembly DRAPAC 2025 in Kuala Lumpur—organised in collaboration with EngageMedia, AoD, and Sinar Project—brought together more than 500 participants from across the Asia-Pacific region working in technology and digital rights. INITIATE.MY hosted two key events: a panel discussion on how tech-facilitated abuse affects human security and democracy in Southeast Asia, and a workshop on mapping regional tech abuse threats and identifying strategies and resources to address them.

Knowledge Hub

(2025)

Through its Knowledge Hub workshops and online repository, INITIATE.MY trained over 20 civil society organisations in data collection, data storytelling, and strategies to address tech‑facilitated abuse, legal risks, and digital security threats.
