Report Launch & Panel Discussion On Far-Right Extremism & Tech Accountability

Building on INITIATE.MY’s earlier 2024 report on far-right extremism (FRE), the 2025 edition examines the growing role of Big Tech platforms in amplifying FRE in Malaysia. Through analyses of recent case studies—including “Penang is Kedah’s,” the crackdown on GISB, the Chinese flag dispute in Teluk Intan, and the KK Mart controversy—the report illustrates how platform algorithms, content moderation gaps, and limited transparency can enable FRE narratives around identity such as race and religion to spread rapidly online. These digitally amplified discourses can deepen social divisions, erode trust in institutions, and in some cases translate into real-life harassment and violence, underscoring the need for stronger multi-stakeholder collaboration to enhance platform accountability and develop more proactive responses to counter FRE.

At the report launch, the lead researchers presented key findings, offered in-depth analyses of the case studies, and outlined policy reform recommendations. This was followed by a multi-stakeholder dialogue on confronting far-right extremism in Malaysia’s digital ecosystem. The dialogue brought together 55 participants from government ministries and agencies, diplomatic missions, tech platforms, private sector companies, and international and local civil society organisations. Discussions centred on the need to strengthen legislative frameworks, the evolving role of media, and the responsibilities of digital platforms—including whether alternative platforms offer viable solutions. Participants also reflected on practical steps each stakeholder group can take, underscoring the importance of a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to addressing far-right extremism. Following the event, further engagements were initiated with relevant government agencies and ministries to explore potential policy reforms and collaborative next steps.
